Asthma affects one in ten Australians and, in 2012, 394 people died from Asthma. Asthma affects people of all ages. However, it is more prevalent among young male children and middle-aged females.

Sam is the CEO of the Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association (vaada). He spoke about the relative impact of alcohol and various other drugs on Victoria and Australia. In particular, he compared the impact of ice with that of other substances.

Beryl Jones visited the Cub and introduced Rhiannon a student who has benefited from the work of The Smith family. Beryl has been a tireless volunteer for many years and we saw their work first hand.
Warwick Mihaly-- Why engage an architect?
Warwick Mihaly is the Principal Architect with the firm Mihaly Slocombe. He also teaches design and construction, and writes a blog under the name Panfilocastraldi. He spoke about the 10 reasons one should use an architect on construction projects.
Rob Newton-- The Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences
Rob Newton is the principal of University High School. He spoke the history and contribution of University High School, the rationale for establishing the Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences as a sub-school of University High, and the type of education it provides.

James Herringer - RMIT and Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition
James inroduced his team of undergraduate and postgraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) who are exploring the feasibility of replacing conventional jet fuel with liquid methane for commercial aircraft. Supported by academics within RMIT University, School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SAMME), the project was selected for further development in the 2013 Airbus “Fly Your Ideas” Competition.

Kate Goodridge Griffith is currently an Honours student at the University of Melbourne studying how to bridge to gap between perception and reality of Islam in the western world. The RC of Carlton supported Kate to attend the National Youth Conference of Australia: www.ylaleaders.org.au/2015-nyc.html held in Canberra 14-18 April 2015.

In his role he investigates alleged assaults committed by taxi drivers and other negligent behaviour.
He briefly discussed the car share model Uber. He state that it is illegal and unlicensed at the moment in Victoria but State Government is still to decide whether to change that status.

Mr Denis Baguley has been the Chief Executive at Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne since 2003. He spoke of the recent developments at the Shrine and the 2014-2018 Anzac Centenary.

David Bowtell is head of the Cancer Genetics and Genomics Laboratory at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He spoke about central concepts in the genetics of cancer and about exciting developments in treatment.

Karen Block is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Health Equity in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health of the University of Melbourne.

Betty talked about the origins of Mental Health First Aid training, the Action Plan taught in the course, its spread to over 20 countries, and told some stories about her experiences in taking the training program to those countries.

Franco Urlini, Counsellor and Mediator Family Court
Franco shared some of his near 4 decades of experience as a counsellor at the Victoria Family Court. He brought home that there are many sad clients of this court. Only a small number of separated couples go to Court. The ones that do, are often sad and or angry. Having restricted access to your kids is tough and it can be difficult to maintain a good relationship with the children.
Hat Day: Jo Robinson—New approaches to suicide prevention in young people
Jo Robinson was invited as a speaker as part of the Club’s celebration of Australian Rotary Health Hat Day. Jo works as a researcher at Orygen on youth suicide. She spoke about priorities for suicide research and new approaches to suicide prevention using the internet and social media.
Bronwyn Stephens -- Cambodia
Bronwyn spoke about a project in Cambodia that the Rotary Club of Carlton is involved in, together with other clubs in the district. The project won a Rotary District International Service Award 2013-2014.
