Michelle Heard is a Rotary Global Grant Scholar from the USA, who is studying at the University of Melbourne in the areas of global justice, ethics and human rights.

Justin has established a number of enterprises in sectors diverse as food retail, legal services,

import/export, International Hotel and Hospitality consultancy and learning advisory.

In addition to his role as Managing Partner of the management advisory and coaching firm Cullen Myers,

Justin holds a number of non-executive director roles, is a regular corporate speaker, maintains a select

group of coaching clients and is an active Rotarian.

Julie is a member of the Rotary Club of Wyndham and the District Governor Elect. She spoke about her career as a teacher, the various roles she has had in Rotary, some special moments she has had through Rotary, and her goals and aspirations as District Governor.

Update on Cambodia with the Oaktree Foundation

Simon gave an update on two projects. The Girls’ Education Initiative (GEI) promotes and enhances educational opportunities for Cambodian children, especially girls, living in rural areas. Interventions are holistic, and focus on long term continuity throughout their schooling and into employment.

!an Ada  presented the Club Vision prepared by a sub-committee, and reflected on the outcomes of the Visioning Workshop on 15 March. He provided opportunity for comment, particularly from those not able to be present at the workshop.  

Justin had previously given a talk to the Club on 20/5/14 about a mentor training program started by the Rotary Club of Yarra Bend. His current talk summarized the previous one and updated on progress that has been made in mentor training. 

Aims philosophy is Full participation for all in a cohesive and diverse society;

• AMES was established in 1951 to provide English language programs to migrants, refugees and recently asylum seekers
• Over the past 60 years services have grown
• Today AMES is the largest provider of settlement services in Australia:
  on arrival settlement services;
  English language and literacy tuition,
  vocational training;
  and employment services
• From the beginning volunteers have played an important role in adding value to AMES services for new arrivals

Stephen Mayne is an Australian Walkley Award winning journalist, local government councillor, and self-described shareholder activist.

UNESCO defines literacy as an …

"ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts much more than this … reading context, body language, tone of voice etc.

It is related to the 4 modes of language, receptive modes – listening and reading expressive modes – speaking and writing plus thinking! 

Meri Ivanovska and Colleen Hall are from the Inner Northern Local Learning and Employment Network (INLLEN). INLLEN is an independent community organisation in the municipalities of Moreland, Darebin and Yarra. INLLEN’s role is to create partnerships between government, industry, the education sector, and the local community and to develop local responses to improve education training and employment outcomes for young people.

They described the Moreland L2P program and invited Club members to volunteer as mentors.

Juan Ford is a prominent artist. His work has been included in major galleries and he was one of the top 5 in the Archibald Prize in 2012. He presented images of his work from 2006 to the present and discussed the evolution of his work and what inspired it.

John Elligate and Jared Voss— Just Cruising

John Elligate spoke briefly on his positive experiences of cruises and introduced Jared Voss from Cruise About, who has worked on cruise ships and now is a travel agent for anything to do with cruises.

Orangutan Habitats

Only one out of six orphan Orangutans are lucky enough to be rescued - over one thousand orphaned orangutans are living in rescue and rehabilitation centres. Care of these infants is costly and requires 24hr staff, veterinary, and nurse care to ensure they are in a healthy condition and have the best chance to survive – and possibly even return to the wild.

Zev Eleftheriou is an actor, stuntman and stunt coordinator. Films he has worked on include ‘The Water Diviner’, ‘Wolf Creek’, ‘Red Dog’ and ‘Ned Kelly. He was also the stunt coordinator for the ‘Underbelly’ TV series.

Alan spoke about his childhood in England, his working life, his emigration to Australia through Rotary sponsorship, and his extensive involvement with Rotary since 1976.
