Rhys Watson

Rhys Watson- Chair of the Graduate Union. TOPIC: “ The Graduate Union – An International Collegium – Visions for the Future”

The Graduate Union is an association that has been around fo 105 years, Rhys believes its founders imagined a future with talented people who would lead the community.

The philanthropic element of the Graduate Union used to just consist of an annual giving program.  They are now looking at this and establishing a bequest society, and considering the establishment of a foundation.  The annual giving program will now be project/target based to make it more relatable.

Graduate House is the only college at Melbourne University for post grad students - there are over 40,000 students at Melbourne Uni and around 20,000 are post grads.  The college wants to provide more than just a room, but a collegiate experience that supports and nutures the needs of the residents.

A master plan has been established for the future of the college in three parts.  Part A is the people part, looking at how the college can develop its intellectual capital which includes its strateguc alliances with Rotary and the Variety Club as well as a reciprocal arrangement with the Kelvin Club.

Part B is the expansion of its facilities from 120 to 360 rooms by way of an 11 level building, as well as an acquistion strategty of offsite expansion which is more flexible.
