PDG Peter Frueh

Peter  Freu (PDG) and Director of Membership (District 9800) addressed a range of issues relevant to encouraging and retaining members of Rotary, as well as being prudent in the distribution of funds generated from Fundraising activities. Peter previously worked in the areas of finance and investment and was associated with both Telsta and Hewlett Packard prior to becoming significantly involved in Rotary both at local and District level. Questions initially focussed on two major areas, namely, “Why do people join Rotary and, How is money raised distributed to organisations versus specific projects?

This talk and interaction with our members included the Rotary Theme and current focus for Rotary for the next 12 months being "Serve To Change Lives"
This will be achieved through undertaking sustainable projects that will have a lasting impact on communities both locally and internationally.
District 9800 has a big role to play via District Support Services helping the various clubs to enable Rotarians and their Clubs to increase Rotary's impact and reach in the various communities with the ongoing individual projects.  It also has a New Learning Centre which provides tool kits in various project areas as well as President Elect Training. There are 8 Rotarians with expertise and advice in a number of areas to assist clubs at District Support Services. We were encouraged to utilise this District Service for our Club during the year.
It is important to focus on achieving a pathway for young people to connect with Rotary and our District Governor elaborated on an example where Brighton Rotary was currently undertaking a role with Brighton Grammar secondary students.  This involvement will enable their students to learn Rotary skills and methods of fundraising during their school years.  This may well increase the profile and membership of Rotary with feedback to parents and friends of the students.
Young people are currently very interested in the environment and sustainability.  This provides a great opportunity for Rotary to focus on projects relevant in this area.  Mention was made of our own club's Environment & Sustainability Committee and what it was aiming to undertake in the environmental area.  It was considered a good opportunity to connect with schools in our area.
Utilising Media i.e. Facebook and having an informative Website should have a positive impact in local area programmes.   Carlton's current connection with local newspapers was discussed and considered to be very positive exposure for our philanthropic programmes.
