Greg Champion

Greg mentioned his early life, being born in Benalla, but almost immediately moved to Hectorviile, an Adelaide suburb.  This led to his becoming an Adelaide Crows fan even though he has spent his adult life back in Victoria.

He joined Jeff Richardson, Simon Whelan and Ian Cover as a member of the Coodabeens in 1983 on 3RRR.  They first started on ABC 774 in 1988 and have now performed well over 1000 shows.  Greg sings eight songs during each two hour episode, with original lyrics to well known song tunes about clubs, their performances and the idiosyncrasies of individual players  Four to six songs are newly written each week, so he now has a repertoire of 4500 songs.  Ideas for subjects come from amongst the 80 or so Emails he receives from fans each week.

Greg played a few requests from members including:

  • “The 6.15 from Montmorency” about the feral horde of Collingwood fans descending on the MCG.
  • A Bomber medley, mainly about the drugs saga at Essendon.
  • Sayings of Guru Bob, the idea for which came from meeting a Hare Krishna at the Prahran market. One of Guru Bob’s better known proverbs is "Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes, that way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you've got their shoes."
