 Frank McGuire

Hume Global Learning Village

Frank spoke of his days growing up in Broadmeadows after his family migrated to Australia in 1959. Broadmeadows was an urban-rural fringe area with considerable manufacturing industry. The area was home to successive waves of migrants.   The state government had built housing for workers but supplied very little in the way of public amenities, there was not even a public library.  Despite these drawbacks, Frank’s parents saw Broadmeadows as a place of opportunity where their family could achieve .  Frank won a scholarship and went on to tertiary education. After a successful career in journalism, Frank has been instrumental in helping to give Broadmeadow the educational and civic facilities which were so lacking for many years. Prominent is the Hume Global Learning Village which had its origins a decade ago.   The Village is a partnership of over 750 organisations and individuals.  The community has been extensively consulted in the work of the Village, including strategic planning for the Village.   Today Broadmeadows has the impressive Global Learning Centre, which incorporates a public library, community meeting rooms, training rooms, public access internet and a coffee shop.  Funding and support was provided by the Victorian Government, the Pratt Foundation, The Age newspaper and the Hume Council.
