David Lea
David academic prowess is significant. He attended Melbourne University 1953 followed by 3 years of teaching Geography, History, German and Philosophy. David’s interest in sport was apparent from an early age where physical activity, and, in particular, hockey became his major passions. David began a long and highly successful career in Technical Education which included teaching appointments to Essendon Tech, Aspendale Tech, Bendigo Tech, VP at Yallourn Tech in 1970, and Relieving Principal at 12 TAFE schools (10 years). David spoke of the demise of Technical Education in the 1980’s which saw many schools closed by the Education Department (Victoria).
In 1983 David entered politics in which he was successful in securing a marginal seat in the Victorian Parliament (Sandringham). David stated that politics in the 21C has declined significantly for example, in which trust has become a thing of the past. David’s time in politics allowed him to visit London and the United States by being awarded a Scholarship from the auspices of Local Government and Victorian Education Department. In 1991, David won Pre - Selection again for his seat, but due to the pressures of politics and the well being of his family he retired and resigned.
One of David’s legacies has been in the area of poetry. He has written a number of books and citations, and the presentation of his poem “The Miner’s Cottage’ (Awarded in Bendigo) summarises David’s life of respect, loyalty, dedication of service and love to his family and Rotary.
