Elaine Pratley
Elaine outlined the following 4 sequential aspects of Cultural Intelligence:
- CG Drive / Motivation to know how people learn and act.
- CQ Knowledge / training* - see more information o this aspectbelow
- CQ Strategy - to be reflective to enhance proactive preparation
- CQ Action - to have the ability to act and to adapt through the utilization of the above aspect.Having good CQ Action means to be able to learn from mistakes very quickly when in a new cultural situation.
* There are 7 aspects of CQ Knowledge:
- Individualism Vs Collectivism some cultures have values based not on the individual/self but rather about the family and community.
- Power Distance - some cultures have a strong sense of hierarchy, e.g. n Australia, there is a less hierarchical and a more flat structure.
- Uncertainty Avoidance - some cultures see things in a more black and white perspective, wanting clarity and set ways to do things.
- Cooperative Vs Competitive for some cultures the outcome for the group is more important than 'winning'
- Time Orientation - a short term Vs a long term viewpoint considered more important.
- Context - Direct approach Vs Indirect approach in interacting. The culture in Germany and the Netherlands may be seen as more direct ('call a spade a spade'), whereas a more indirect approach is appropriate in the Middle Eastern cultures (politeness and respect more important than content matter)
- Being Vs Doing - Live to work Vs Work to live.
