Roy Hardcastle AO

Next >

Roy joined the Rotary of Carlton a year after the club was chartered. His aim is to have a lot of friends and keep physically and mentally alert. He achieves that by coming to the weekly meeting, help at the barbecues where he enjoys talking to members in a different setting and people from the general public. He had a funny story of one of these encounters. He is a member of the Retired Consulting Engineers with his university friends. They had their 69th reunion recently. His engineering knowledge is used in advising the Christ Church in South Yarra of the impact of the metro tunnel.

Roy got a scholarship to study at Melbourne Tech college now RMIT University. He met John Storey with who he formed the RMIT student union in 1944. John died of leukemia at age 22 and his dad Sir John created a memorial scholarship bearing his name. During the renovation of building 16 in 1995, the hall was renamed to Storey Hall.

Roy is a life member of the Graduate Union that hosts our weekly meetings. The membership was an one off payment against a yearly membership. According to him, this membership has been paid off a long time ago.

Roy competed in the Masters Games in 2001 but had no chance winning as he was against ex-olympians in the 70-75 age group. Now in his 90-95 age group, he may finally have the edge.

Roy loves swimming in the swimming pool of his residence but the shallow end doesn't allow him to tumble turn.
