Julie Large – Principal, Carlton PS

Julie Large commenced her teaching career in specialised (deaf) schools and then moved into regular teaching. She has been Principal at Carlton Primary School for over 6 years

The School was built about 40 years ago for an enrolment of 400 students.  It now has about 100 students and 12 permanent staff. Predominately it caters for children from the adjacent Public Housing flats who are mostly from the Horn of Africa and almost exclusively their families are receiving Government benefits.

Julie says the children are a joy to teach, are coping well and are curious to learn.

The school has a broad base of innovative programs and greatly appreciates the likes of Anne Ada, Ann Broughton, John Elligate and Phil Kreveld etc. who come in on a regular voluntary basis to help students in areas the permanent staff are unable to cover in their normal busy days.

Local agencies, CLAN, Rotary, Neighbourhood Learning Centre and Melbourne City Council all contribute to bring additional facilities to the students and school generally.

Two of the students, (Mohamed and Emad) spoke of their appreciation of the work Anne Ada is doing to help them understand and enjoy mathematics.

Also attending was Nazara who has been in a Support role at the school since 2010 whilst she is studying at Melbourne University.  Her aim is to build a school in Africa.
