Fr Michael Elligate OA - Principles of Ethic Research

Michael spoke about some of his work as Chair of a number of ethics research committees including The University of Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Health. The work of these committees carries enormous responsibility. The primary purpose of a statement of ethical principles and associated guidelines for research involving humans is the protection of the welfare and the rights of participants in research.

There is an important secondary purpose of a statement of ethical principles and accompanying guidelines, and that is to facilitate research that is or will be of benefit to the researcher’s community or to humankind.

 

Michael also spoke the importance of the role of the chairperson in ensuring that all members of the committee participate and exercise their responsibility in accord with their areas of expertise relevant to the study.
