Prof Roger Rassool--Physics Innovation for a Developing World

Pneumonia is a major cause of death in children in poor countries. There is a simple treatment that can save lives, which is to give oxygen to assist breathing. However, oxygen is not readily available in these countries. The FREO2 project has built an oxygen concentrator that can be used in areas where there is no access to electricity. It uses running water as a source of energy. Other work is being carried out to store oxygen in countries that have an intermittent electricity supply.
