Winners for 2017-18

Keith Ryall, Chair of the RID 9800 Global Grant Scholarships ( GGS ) Committee announced that there will be Co-Winners of the prestigious GGS following rigorous Selection Interviews at Graduate House on Wednesday April 12 2017.

They are Dr Clare Lin, a Bachelor of Dental Science (Hons) 2011 from the University of Melbourne and Dr Ida Whiteman, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Hons) 2012 from Monash University. Ida also completed a Diploma in Child Health from the University of Sydney in 2015. Clare has been offered a place at Harvard University - a Master of Public Health, commencing August 2017 until May 2018. Ida will be completing two Masters Programs at Oxford University; the first is a Master of Science in International Health & Tropical Medicine commencing October 2017 and the second - a Master of Public Policy commencing October 2018.

Clare provides oral healthcare to patients in a diverse range of settings from Melbourne dental clinics to Indigenous communities in the Kimberley region. Through her volunteer work with the Kimberley Dental Team, she has developed a strong interest in Indigenous oral health and is committed to making a difference in this area. After completing her Masters, she plans to return to Australia and work towards closing the gap in oral health outcomes through public health advocacy, research and policy.

Ida is a Paediatric Registrar currently working at Sunshine Hospital and usually based at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Her goal is to use her study at Oxford to prepare her for a career working with Indigenous children. Ida aims to initially work in a clinical and public health role in Indigenous Health, and then move into a health policy role in the future. Through this, she will then integrate the evidence she gains working on community health programs in Indigenous health into Australian Government Indigenous Programs.

Both Global Grant Scholarships are valued at USD30,000 ; Rotary International District 9800 has been providing these prestigious Scholarships since 2013; the very first recipient being Ms Lien Trinh who successfully completed a Master of Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Health in 2014 and has been working in the field of Eye Care primarily for the Indigenous Community.

Our congratulations are extended to all past and current Global Grant Scholarship winners on their outstanding achievements and personal qualities; as befits The Rotary Foundation, they are truly “”DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD.””

Clare was nominated by Rotary Carlton and Ida by Rotary North Melbourne.
