Down syndrome is the most common genetic disability, occurring in one of every 700 to 900 births in every country of the world, covering all ethnic groups and nationalities. Approximately 3000 people in Victoria have Down syndrome, with between 50 and 70 new babies born each year.

Dr Claire Kelly is coordinator of youth programs with Mental Health First Aid Australia. She described a new training program called ‘teen Mental Health First Aid’, which teaches adolescents how to better support their peers.

John McCaskill (RC of Canterbury) is the District Chair for Group Study Exchange (GSE). He spoke about the what GSE involves, the benefits of the program and how the Rotary Club of Carlton could be involved. He also spoke briefly about another Rotary program he is involved with-- Donations in Kind (DIK).

Peter is a member of the Rotary Club of Brighton Beach. His parents were Danish Missionaries and he grew up in the African bush. In 2001 He came to Australia as part of a Rotary youth exchange and lived in Albury/Wodonga. He was chosen from an initial group of one thousand applicants

Lea Waters is from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne and has been appointed to a Chair in positive psychology. Positive psychology is a new area of research within psychology, which attempts to increase positive emotional states. It complements the traditional emphasis within psychology on intervention to reduce negative emotional states.

Terry Twomey: Leading a School after the Kinglake Fires

SUMMARY: Despite suffering deaths and departures from the school fcommunity ollowing the Kingslake fires in February 2009, Whittlesea Secondary College school maintains a positive profile. Its strength is through working closely with the local community. The Government either needs to invest more in education or pay later in more for welfare.
