October is fast approaching and that means it is nearly time for our End Polio Walk to commence.

To add to the fun of the month, the following activities have been arranged to help you reach your targeted kms.

• Launch Event: Sunday 1st October -  WH Lee Park, Cnr Davis St and The Esplanade, Altona. 10am for a lovely walk around the foreshore.

• Paws for Polio Walk:  Saturday 14th October. Elsternwick Park.  10am with your four-legged furry friend.

• Bendigo's walk to EndPolio: Sunday 22nd October (to be confirmed)

• Final Walk: Sunday 29th October - Studley Park, Kew. 10am with two walking options

The Melbourne Conference Organisers are looking for Volunteers from amongst Rotarians, family and friends who would be able to help at the following venues and times:

• Melbourne Museum : Held at the Melbourne Museum on May 27th. Two shifts of volunteers required - 5.30pm to 8pm for 24 volunteers and 8pm - 10pm for 8 volunteers. All volunteers shall be able to have a complimentary beverage at the museum as a thank you. Volunteers shall meet at the main Museum entrance and then be allocated a task. They shall be assisting with directing delegates from the bus drop off points in Rathdowne and Nicholson streets to the main entrance before and after the event as well as directing delegates into and around the museum.
• South Wharf - Food of Melbourne : situated at the west end of South Wharf. Two shifts of volunteers required, one on May 29th( night of Club Hosting/ so assume unlikely )   and the second on May 30th from 5.30pm to 7.30pm both nights for 10 volunteers each shift. They shall meet at the Promenade exit at MCEC and be placed along South Wharf directing delegates towards the food venues along Dukes Walk up till the Showtime Events Centre.
• Flemington Melbourne Cup Event : Tues May 30th Volunteers are required to meet at Southern Cross station and direct delegates to the correct dedicated platform for train departure to Flemington Race Course. One shift for 10 volunteers from 5.30pm - 6.30pm.

All volunteers( can include family and friends )  need to complete registration details – General volunteers do not need to be  a Registered  Convention Delegate ( only required for Volunteers at the Melbourne Convention and Entertainment Centre and Inside Rod Laver Arena )

It's nearly time to put on your walking shoes to raise funds to End Polio Now.  The October walk challenge is fast approaching, join our team and start raising funds now.

Younger members of our community (20 -40 yo) make a major contribution to the number of people who volunteer in Australia.  They have strong preferences when it comes to deciding where to dedicate their time and are particularly passionate about their choices. 

The Rotary Club of Carlton would like to find out what younger community members think are the most important issues that need to be addressed in our Carlton/Parkville community.  You can do this by listing a project that you think can make a meaningful difference to address this issue at https://forms.gle/wxdamYPJFVxqqHbn8 

After collecting these over the next month we will invite young people to vote for the one that they believe can be best achieved by a group working together.  We will then invite those who have voted for the three projects that get the highest number of votes to meet and develop a project plan.  The Rotary Club has members who can provide advice on project planning and management as appropriate and support at least one project with a small amount of seeding funding if needed.  However, it will remain the young people’s project.

We do know that younger people are attracted to projects that align with their priorities that:

• make a meaningful difference – things such as environment, equity and mental health, that directly impact beneficiaries, and which they can share on social media.
• are hands-on – they are participatory, and have tangible results that visibly benefit people, so they can share the results of their work
• are conveniently held in their local community, are run regularly, particularly after hours, and are free to participate.

The time lines for identifying the final projects are:

1. List a community project at the platform shown above by Saturday 17 September.
2. Vote for a preferred project by Saturday 8 October
3. Join a group to develop a project plan for one of the top three projects in the latter half of October and early November.
